The Good 'Ole Days

Waxhaw was a sleepy little town when I moved here in 1978. The town didn’t have a traffic light. There was no need. There was very little traffic. It had been a thriving cotton town back in the 1930’s (or so I’ve been told). There was a train station across from the hotel (now a private residence). In the 70’s & 80’s it changed into a town filled with antique stores.

I'm from a small town in east Tennessee and moved to Charlotte in 1976. We eventually bought a small existing home in downtown Waxhaw. At that time it was an easy drive into Charlotte or Monroe. There was very little traffic on Providence Road. New homes were few and far between. The town was filled with antique stores, a restaurant or two, one small hardware store, Broome’s Barber Shop (proprietor, Wade Broome since 1948 - now owned by Kathy & Donovan Matthews) and the mayor (Simon Rogers) had a small grocery store at the edge of town. It pretty much stayed the sleepy, lazy, relaxing little town until the mid 90’s.

We are located in Union County and the county seat is Monroe, NC, but most of our growth is spurred by what goes on in Charlotte. Basically, we are a bedroom community of Charlotte. Now, the antique stores are mostly gone (some are now restaurants), the hardware store is much larger and there’s talk of Lowe’s coming in, the small grocery store is a tanning salon and new homes and new subdivisions are going up all around. The barber shop is still here and looks much the same as it did when Wade ran it. It’s now a 3 chair shop. We have two supermarkets and a Target is going in at Wesley Chapel (about 5 miles away).

There are some beautiful new homes and subdivisions being built in Waxhaw, Weddington, Wesley Chapel and Marvin. The real estate market in this area is still good. It has slowed some but not as bad as other parts of the country.

I guess things can’t always stay the same, but sometimes I look back and think of the simpler, quieter times and wonder...... Wait a minute; I’m starting to think like my parents? Is that what they called “back in the good old days”? Visit historic downtown Waxhaw, NC.
